In terms of SAP, Digital Transformation means the basic fundamental changes or amendments by the humans that are associated by digital technology. And digital technologies provide – availability of a global digital communication platform (internet), availability of various types of devices (computer, laptops, smart phones) and controllers.
Did you know that the digital technologies also lets you wrap an entity digitally in the world, thereby opening strong second level interactions. Therefore, subjects and objects can be attacked both physically and digitally using their digital wrap. That’s why the need for cyber security for all sorts of digital transformation!
Digital revolution, also known as the fourth industrial revolution, is the change from mechanical technology and analog technology, to digital technology! The digital revolution is the main reason behind the digital transformation and the digital technology is characterized by the access of internet as a medium of communication and the availability of smart devices and programmable controllers.
Digital Transformation is driven by the spread and distribution of our lives, societies, businesses, infrastructure by technologies. Therefore, this permeation and penetration of human world with the digital technologies causes threats and thefts, some of which are:
- Digital Identity Theft
- Cyber Crime
- Cyber Terrorism & Cyber Warfare
The digital interaction has some different characteristics compared to physical interactions. A digital interaction is possible even from a remote point of view.
With the speed of light, one can interact with and control physical devices. If one starts to think more about this point, then it becomes clear that, besides the security of this physical interaction, we should think about securing the digital interaction. And this is exactly what cyber security is about!
For example, if you start buying something, it needs to be very clear that you as a person are ordering something, or are buying something. But your digital identity is doing this, so the connection between digital identity and the human person is very important. Thus, it shouldn’t allow cyber crime activities.
Let’s dig deeper and under it further with another example – Hacking a Car. Well, majorly all the modern automobiles have incorporated numerous computer systems like navigation, GPS, anti-theft systems, emergency calls facilities, wireless access points, control systems for engines, brakes steering, and a huge multitude of sensors. So what do these do? They get more synchronized and connected with each other and with the internet.
Every car can be accessed remotely with its individual IP address. In many cases, the attackers connect to the car’s mobile internet uplink after revealing its IP address and connect to the car’s entertainment system,which itself is connected to the car’s internal network (CAN). After rewriting the “firmware” of the entertainment system, attackers can easily write commands into the CAN bus and can control all functions of the car – the engine, brakes, and tyres.
Once the car is remotely accessed, the attackers can take control of wipers, lights, air conditioning, CAN bus, turn off the engine, lower the speed, partly control the steering wheel, enable and disable brakes as and when they like, and most importantly, track the GPS. So, cyber security is a really important aspect in digital transportation.
Now, let’s discuss about the internet. Internet was first used in the 80s, last century. The usage at that time was only in the academics. It was used for communication of research results. Then, by the end of the 90s, last century, the Internet was detected also by business and society. This was the point where it rapidly grew up.
Technically speaking, the first browser with a graphical user interface was a Mosaic browser that occurred in 2003, 2004. And by means of this graphical user interface, this browser, which is a window into the web, is a client for Web application, could be used by anyone and everyone. In the early days, you needed to be a specialist in computer science to know exactly what kind of controls you had to give in. But with the graphical user interface, it was only click and on-point. So if you see the development of humankind from 6.5 billion in 2005 to 7.2 billion in 2014, then Internet users in 2005 were already considered a part of the 16% and it grew in almost 10 years to 40%. The users in the developing world, the number of users has increased. developed world the increase was from 50% to almost 80%. This was the development of the usage of the Internet. It shows that Internet becomes an integral part of our modern society. Internet and Web were used as the global communication hub.
Users spend a lot of time on the internet for communications – emails, chats, Skype, Instant Messaging, forums discussion, blogs or on social media. While in terms of business, shopping is what people are doing on the Internet as it’s become so easy!
Another trend on the Internet and in the usage of the Internet is that video content becomes more and more important, which is the simplest way to interact with each other. Video content rapidly evolves and share of overall traffic increases – how the Internet is used.
For example, more than 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube within one minute. In one minute, more than 100 hours are uploaded to YouTube. So, it’s an insanely increasing platform for such multimedia information and data. Also, Vimeo, Netflix, Twitter, have given us the new way to present content, and to interact with each other.
Online payment is a very recent trend, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Bitcoin, where the shopping experience on the internet is completely digitalized. The smart phones make everything possible – regardless of where you are, you can use the internet and interact with anyone who is connected to the Internet.
